So I backed Arsenal to beat Liverpool last Wednesday but that doesn’t tell the whole story. To be honest I feel lucky that this bet won as Arsenal were playing poorly – they looked a nervous team after their recent bad run.

After Liverpool scored in the second half I immediately layed Arsenal to win. So effectively I was taking another punters stake on Arsenal to win, but on much lower odds than I backed them to win at the start of the game. Why did I lay Arsenal? - I wasn’t confident that Arsenal would see the victory out, I felt they were lucky to be in-front anyway and Liverpool always looked an attacking threat when going forward.

Below is how my book and as you can see I couldn’t lose whatever the outcome after 90 minutes:

Today’s bet on the Championship

Today I will back Swansea to beat Newcastle at the Liberty Stadium. The Welsh club, who are fifth, have kept three consecutive clean sheets and have not conceded a goal in more than five hours of league football. At just over 6/4 on Bet Fair Swansea look overpriced – with the advantage of Betting in play and the match being televised I may lay Swansea at some point as described above.

Stake: £21
Odds: 2.64

My decision to back Chelsea turned out to be bad move and resulted in me taking a week’s break from gambling. As promised in my first betting diary post I would bet at least once every week, and tonight I turn to Arsenal to help me get back on track.

Arsenal have been in bad from recently so why back them? Two of Arsenal’s recent defeats have been at the hands of the two biggest sides in the league, Chelsea and Man Utd. Arsenal played some excellent football against Chelsea, especially in the second half so I feel there hasn’t been a dip in performances. Liverpool have been grinding out results recently but they don’t look like a top-four team when Torres isn’t playing and Gerrard has been out of form recently.

Arsenal to beat Liverpool

Stake: £20
Odds: 2.00 (even money)

Well I am on somewhat of a roll recently, winning my last four football bets. I backed Man City to beat Portsmouth at the weekend but didn’t blog about it:

This winning streak was badly needed after losing my first four bets. Luckily I kept my cool during the losing spell and haven’t done anything silly (as yet…). I have followed the rules outlined in my first post:

I can only bet a maximum 10% of my balance at a time

Will never chases losses (some losses are inevitable)

Must make at least two bets twice a week

Will not bet whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol

Will not bet when tired (e.g. in between 12am – 6am)

WILL STAY AWAY FROM GREYHOUNDS AND VIRTUAL HORSE RACING AT ALL COSTS

Extra spice

Tonight I’ve decided to spice things up and add my Celebrity Big Brother winnings to my betting pot, so my betting balance tonight is £245.81. Tonight I’m backing Chelsea to beat Hill City at the KC stadium. I hope the reason why I’m backing Chelsea tonight is obviously for most of you, anything but a win for Chelsea would be perceived as a serious set back to their title challenge. Plus John Terry loves scoring away from home.

Stake: £25
Odds: 1.27

No I’m not talking about John Terry’s bedroom antics, I’m talking about John Terry’s winner at Burnley to help his Chelsea side move four points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

John Terry’s winning goal will at least mean that the England captain will be in Sunday’s papers for some of the right reasons. Terry recently hit the headlines following allegations that the captain had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of his former Chelsea and England team-mate Wayne Bridge.

This is the biggest sporting scandal since revelations about Tiger Woods infidelity. More spice has been added to this story since it was revealed that a high court judge lifted a court order on Friday that had prevented the media from reporting these allegations.

Should John Terry remain England’s captain?

Football phone-ins and chat forums are now debating whether John Terry should be allowed to keep hold of his England captaincy ahead of such a crucial period for the English national team. The World Cup starts in only 132 days and these revelations can only hamper England’s World Cup preparation.

I personally feel John Terry should step down as team captain. Everyone is entitled to a private life but John Terry is a person in a privileged position who should no better. Being England captain brings certain responsibilities and automatically makes you a role model for millions of youngsters.

Cheating on your wife and team-mate are not the kind of values we want to in-still into our youth today. So John Terry, please do the honourable thing and stand down as England captain before you’re pushed. Fabio Capello is well known as a disciplinarian and surely he won’t accept these sort of antics.

What do you think? Has John Terry’s position as England captain become untenable?, or do you think Fabio Capello should stick by his captain?
